The Energy Drink Epidemic

By Thomas J. Boud, MD Dr. Boud works in family medicine at a primary care facility and volunteers for the Church as a consulting physician in the Missionary Medical Department.

In recent years there has been an explosion of energy drinks with high levels of caffeine—a drug with greater risks than many realize.

It's nice that this article gives us a lot of medical information, then takes it to the personal level of what it means for us. As a non-caffeine drinker, I am sure this article didn't affect me like it will others. However, being someone who abused food for many years, I think that this is great counsel. Use things in moderation and avoid those things that are damaging to your body. The promises of keeping the Word of Wisdom are fabulous! Heavenly Father only wants to protect us!

This article has been quite the topic of conversation at our house!

This is quite timely, as just 3 weeks before I had made a comment to my son's Quorum Advisor to please bring up this topic and discuss why these energy drinks are against the Word of Wisdom.

My son had tried one and now he does nothing but talk about how 'wonderful' it is. He discounts it as anything but helpful. His grandparents bought him a different brand and he promptly fell Asleep! Which proved that you may not get the desired results they promote in their marketing.

All the same, these products are certainly wolves in sheeps clothing and I appreciate the 3rd witness now for my son from the Church on this matter.
